A little bit about my role…
What activities do you do on a typical day?
On a typical day, I discuss activity with staff members and allocate and prioritise work.
I also read through all the previous night’s incidents and manage any actions accordingly in terms of follow up safety activity, as well as checking my emails and reply and action as required.
Within my role, I also attend and chair meetings, both internally and external and engage with external agencies to encourage referrals from targeted groups. As part of the Community Safety Manager role, I also plan campaigns and deal with enquiries from both the public and staff, as well as conducting staff interviews, appraisals and assessments as required.
As a flexi duty officer I also attend operational incidents as and when required.
What do you enjoy about your job?
The fact that I get to make a difference in terms of people’s safety.
I also enjoy the diversity of the role - no two days are ever the same.
Why did you choose this career?
Because I wanted to be someone who could make a difference to people’s lives both in terms of protection and prevention.
What qualifications or experience do you think are necessary to do this job?
You need good management and leadership skills, as well as a background in prevention and a clear understanding of how we can make people safer.
You also need a clear understanding of the benefits of collaboration and partnership working.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue this career?
Work hard, know your subject and be positive.
