North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is re highlighting its campaign to promote a bilingual service to keep people safe from fire in their homes.

The campaign was first promoted by the three Welsh Fire and Rescue Services three years ago and it proved such a success that it is being re launched at the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in Denbigh next week.

Gareth Griffiths from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are appealing to all residents inWalesto take advantage of our free home fire safety checks to keep their loved ones as safe as possible in their homes.

"As well as fitting free smoke alarms where necessary, a member of the fire and rescue service will also help you to formulate a fire escape plan, go through the importance of a safe night time routine and give general hints and tips on fire safety in the home - and this life saving service is also available through the medium of Welsh.

"We recognise that the communities we serve have a high proportion of Welsh speakers and that it is important we can offer our residents the option of communicating in Welsh.

"It is encouraging that since we first launched this campaign we have experienced a real demand for bilingual services in our community. The take up in receiving our home fire safety checks through the medium of Welsh has gradually risen from 4% to 20% in the last three years and we believe it is important to continue to highlight the availability of this bilingual service.

Earlier in June this year North Wales Fire and Rescue Service was unveiled as the winner of the Welsh at Work category in the Institute of Welsh Affairs Inspire Wales Awards in recognition of the active steps taken by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service to promote and increase the use of the Welsh Language resulting in a positive impact within the organisation.

People visiting the fire and rescue services exhibition at the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol and local events acrossNorth Walesover the coming months will receive a handy fridge magnet as a reminder that this service is available bilingually with details of exactly how to request a home fire safety check.

Gareth added: "When it comes to an individual or a family's safety, it is about the need for full access through their language of choice, and this initiative recognise this in a positive, practical way."
