Posted

The importance of Smoke alarms is again being highlighted following three fires in North Wales this weekend.

Crews were called to a property on Thomas Street Holyhead at 05.19 this morning (Sunday 9th October) to reports of a fire. One man was taken to hospital.

Crews were called to a flat fire on Bath Street, Rhyl at 21.07 on Saturday 8th October.

The third incident was at Ffordd Garnedd, Felinheli at 08.35 on Saturday 8th October. The causes of all three fires are under investigation.

Gwyn Jones, Community Safety Manager for Anglesey and Gwynedd, said: “Smoke alarms are vital and give early warning of a fire. We cannot emphasis enough the importance of installing and maintaining smoke alarms. They must be maintained regularly by testing the battery once a week and changing it as per manufactures instruction.

As the weather is getting colder and the nights are getting longer it is important to adhere to the following safety advice to help you reduce the risk of fire in the home as you take additional measures to keep warm.

  • Take care around open fires. Use a fireguard and make sure your chimney is clean.
  • Keep portable heaters away from curtains and furniture and never cover them.
  • Store electric blankets flat or rolled up, never fold. Do not use if the wiring is old or damaged.
  • Keep candles upright, in a suitable holder and never leave unattended. Always extinguish properly.
  • If you experience a power cut and you have mains powered smoke alarms, check that its battery back-up is working.
  • In the event of a fire, get out, stay out and call 999 immediately.
