Students top of the class for fire safety

Posted

Staff from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service this week visited Freshers Fairs at both Bangor and Glyndwr Universities as part of their annual Student Safety Campaign.

This year, in addition to engaging with the students at the fairs and working with the Universities to educate about fire safety and drive down false alarms, the Service will be targeting potentially vulnerable students in private rented accommodation.

Terry Williams, Head of Community Safety, said: "We've had a really busy week talking to students about the importance of fire safety and giving hints and tips to keep them safe. We've also been giving advice on how to avoid false alarms at the halls of residence - we've been working in partnership with both universities on this issue for a number of years and we've seen lots of progress.

"In addition, next month we'll be targeting students in private accommodation, knocking on their doors to offer free home fire safety checks to help keep them as safe as possible.

"Many of these young people are living away from home and their parents for the first time and are potentially very vulnerable.

"We're also using our social networking pages to get our messages across - check out www.facebook.com/Northwalesfireservice and look at the 'Student Competition' tab to find our more and be in with a chance to win a Kindle, or follow us on Twitter @northwalesfire."
