A detached cottage in Llanfachraeth, near Holyhead has been destroyed by fire.

Crews were called to the property at 09.24hrs this morning, Monday 6th January.

The fire is thought to have started in the roof and spread throughout the building as flames were fanned by high winds. Firefighters used hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.

The male owner escaped unhurt after being alerted by a loud noise and evacuated the property before contacting the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Early indications are that the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike, but a full fire investigation is underway.
