Spate of deliberate fires in Bangor area prompts safety warning
PostedA spate of deliberate fires in the Bangor area is causing considerable concern for the North Wales Arson Reduction Team.
People are being urged to stop and think about the consequences of deliberate fires following the recent incidents which have tied up valuable resources.
Since the 4th June 2015 firefighters have attended 10 deliberate fires in the Bangor area.
Crews from Bangor and Llanfairfechan attended a fire at a derelict property in Porth Penrhyn, Tal y Bont at 19.49hrs on Tuesday 9th June. Firefighters were called back to the same location again on 16th June having previously attended the same area on 4th June.
Firefighters from Bangor were called to Ysgol y Garnedd, Ffordd Penrhos at 20.28hrs on 20th June to a fire in the open.
Other incidents have seen fire crews from Bangor called to Maesgeirchen, Penrhosgarnedd and Gerlan, near Bethesda - all in response to deliberate fires.
Kevin Jones, Arson Reduction Manager, said: "It is disheartening to so many incidents which have been ignited deliberately in the same area.
"Deliberate fires place tremendous pressure on resources, with our crews committed to attending and re-attending the same locations to bring them under control - which in turn delays firefighters from attending life threatening incidents.
"There is a very real concern that it could only be a matter of time before one of these incidents develops into a serious fire that could threaten the lives of our firefighters or of the public.
"I am therefore appealing to parents to be more aware of the whereabouts of their children and impress upon them the important message that deliberate fires endanger lives.
"It could be you or a member of your family that requires our assistance and we may not be able to get to you as quickly or as easily as we would like because we have to deal with a deliberate fire."
Setting fires is a criminal offence and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is actively working alongside North Wales Police to combat deliberate incidents.
