Who Would You Call?

Posted

Fire and Rescue Services in Wales have launched a new water safety initiative, as figures show 400 people accidentally drown every year in the UK.

In 2016 there were 24 accidental water-related deaths in Wales – but would you know who to call if you got into difficulty?

The “Who Would You Call?” (WWYC) campaign raises awareness of which emergency service to call should you need help offshore, along the coast or inland.

Dave Ansell, Chair of the All-Wales Water Safety Group and Station Commander at South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said, “During the summer months, we see the number of water-related incidents increase as school finishes and people take time off work to enjoy the warmer weather.

“It’s vital the public understand who they need to call if they’re in trouble; knowing this could mean the difference between life and death.

“Fire and Rescue Services in Wales are there to help those at inland waters where people lose their lives every year. So if you see someone who needs assistance in a river, lake, reservoir or quarry dial 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.”

People are being encouraged to enjoy taking part in leisure activities, in and around the water, but remain vigilant and be aware of the potential risks and dangers.

What to do if someone falls into water:

  • Call 999 for help – ask for the Coastguard if you’re near the coast or offshore, if you’re inland ask for the Fire Service
  • Shout to the person to relax and float
  • Look around for lifesaving equipment or something buoyant to keep them above the surface

Never enter the water yourself
