Cadet unit moves from Beaumaris to Menai Bridge
PostedBeaumaris' Fire Cadets unit will be relocating to Menai Bridge from next month.
The National Fire Cadets is an educational youth organisation run by Fire and Rescue Services in partnership with the National Fire Chiefs Council.
The aim of the scheme is to create safer, stronger communities through developing an individual’s knowledge and awareness of their community to enhance citizenship skills.
The final drill was held at Beaumaris Fire Station earlier this month, and cadets and parents said a special thank you to Watch Manager Charles Brimecombe who has been heavily involved in the scheme since it was launched on station 8 years ago.
Neil Upton, Watch Manager Fire Safety, explained: "Through the Fire Cadet unit, Charles has helped to shape a large number of young people into successful adults by providing them with life skills, confidence and learning opportunities.
"The cadets wanted to thank Charles for all his hard work and dedication and were keen to honour him during their last drill night."
Following the final drill at Beaumaris on the 20th of March, Charles said: "I'm touched that the cadets wanted to take the time to thank me in this way - working with these young people has been inspirational for me. I have really enjoyed my time with the cadets - it's been a pleasure and it has been great to see them going on to develop their lives and careers after a good grounding with the cadets. I'll be keeping in touch and I'm sure the unit will continue to be a success at its new location in Menai Bridge."
The first meeting of the Fire Cadet unit at Menai Bridge will be held on Tuesday April 10th, and all the crew on station will be working with the young cadets at their weekly meetings.
Gwyn Williams, Watch Manager at Menai Bridge Fire Station, added: "We're looking forward to welcoming the cadets to Menai Bridge Fire Station. The programme offers opportunities for young people to take part in the protection of our communities and to gain personal skills such as leadership, learning to work as a team and confidence, while earning qualifications."
The fire cadets provides an opportunity for young people between 11 and 18 to achieve nationally recognised qualifications such as a BTEC Level 2 in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community and vocational certificates of achievement in a variety of areas.
Young people are taught various skills including teamwork, problem solving and communication alongside enhanced life skills to strengthen their employability.
